Things to do in Athens
To get to Aegina, you have to go through Athens, and we know that some of you will be spending some time there. With its many historical sights packed in around a bustling modern city, it’s a place for exploring and wandering, so put down the tight schedule and do things on Greek time. Here are some of our top things to do while in the Greek capital.
-
The Acropolis
This site needs no introduction, but it truly is not to be missed! As well as seeing a cultural icon in person, you will get some of the best views of the city. The accompanying museum is also world-class (though you’ll need separate tickets) and has an excellent restaurant with a direct view of the Parthenon.
-
Wander around Anafiotika
Perched on the north-eastern side of the Acropolis rock, this small, primarily residential district will transport you to the Cyclades islands thanks to the style of the buildings constructed by its original residents who came there in the 19th century from the island of Anafi. Explore the small streets, have a coffee at one of the few cafes, and relax.
-
Benaki Museum of Greek Culture
If you want to get a sense of historical Greece outside of the ancient period, this is the place to visit. While it does have some ancient collections, you’ll find artifacts, paintings, and textiles from the Byzantine period to the 20th century.
-
The National Gardens
An oasis of greenery in a fairly built-up city, taking a stroll around these landscaped gardens is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Formerly the Royal Gardens, it opened to the public in 1927.
-
Go to an open air cinema
With the arrival of warmer weather comes a well-loved Greek pastime: watching movies under the stars. English films are subtitled in Greek (not dubbed) so you won’t have an issue with the language and there are several ones across the city - check out the link for a few recommendations.
-
Day trip to Sounion
Easily accessible by bus from the city centre, going to Sounio will take you along the coast to the Temple of Poseidon, a notable site in Greek mythology. Explore the temple (minus the crowds), take in the breathtaking views, and have a meal at one of the local restaurants before heading back in town.
-
Panathenaic Stadium
Originally the site of athletics competitions and gladiator battles in antiquity, the current stadium was built in 1896 for the first modern Olympics and is the only stadium in the world completely made of marble. You can learn more about its history at the museum on site, head down to the track, and go through the underground passage used by ancient athletes entering the stadium.
-
National Archaeological Museum
Greece is a hotspot for archaeological finds and you’d be hard pressed to find a bigger collection anywhere else. One for the history enthusiasts!
-
Explore the bar scene
Athens punches above its weight when it comes to cocktails and drinks, with three of the world’s fifty best bars currently in the city. You’ll also find plenty of rooftop bars for views of the Acropolis. Head to better known spots like The Clumsies, Baba au Rum, or Line, or take a short walk to see what’s around the corner - you’re never too far from a cool spot.
