Getting to Athens ✈️
Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) is the main gateway to the city of Athens, and the closest airport to Aegina.
Direct flights are available from all European capitals, with plenty of flights available every day.
The airport is well-served both by budget airlines (Ryanair, Wizzair, Easyjet) as well as traditional airlines (British Airways, Aegean, Sky Express, etc.) offering a more comfortable but also more expensive alternative.
If you plan to head to Aegina the same day as your flight arriving, you must book a flight that lands no later than 1pm local time to leave you with enough time to get to the island before the boats stop running in the evening.
Similarly, if you plan to fly out the same day as leaving Aegina, you must not book a flight before 2pm, otherwise, you won’t get there in time.
Getting to the Port of Piraeus 🚇
The Port of Piraeus is the link between the city of Athens and the Saronic Islands - but to take a boat to the island of Aegina, first, you’ll need to get to the port!
Express Bus: We recommend the handy Bus X96 operating directly between the airport and Piraeus.
Tickets cost €5 per person, no need to book in advance, simply tap you debit card to the blue machines once on the bus next to the doors. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes.
Trip time: ~80 min.
Get on at bus stop marked X96, right outside the arrivals hall at the airport.
Get off at the stop called “KARAISKAKI SQUARE”. The port is 2 minutes away.
Metro: A less convenient option from the airport is the metro line M3, but if instead of coming directly from the airport, you want to get to the Port after spending some time in the city center, you should be aware of this option.
Tickets from the airport cost €9 per person, no need to book in advance. You can purchase a ticket from machines by the entrance to the train station, or tap your debit card by the gates. They run roughly every 30 minutes.
Trip time: ~90 min.
Get on at train station at airport, get off at station called “DIMOTIKO THEATRO”. The port is 5 minutes downhill.
Taxi: A comfortable option with a direct route; taxis are readily available outside the terminals. You can also use Uber to book a ride.
Taxis and Uber cost around €65 per trip. If you take an Uber, you will be charged through the app. If you take a taxi, you probably want to have cash on you.
Trip time: ~45min.
Get in right outside the terminal; ask the driver to go to gate E8 in Piraeus Harbour.
Getting to the island of Aegina 🛥️
The boat ride from the Port of Piraeus to Aegina typically takes around 40 minutes to 80 minutes, depending on the service chosen. The port is huge, but as long as you find gate E8, you should be able to see and find the ticket booths for Aegina as soon as you enter. You can check online in advance what the times the boats are going, the only thing to keep in mind is that different boat companies have different booths, so you might have to look for the one that runs the service you want to take - so don’t just buy a ticket at the first booth you find, or you might have to wait an hour or longer!
You have two main options here:
Ferries
Large, comfortable boats with a food & drink bar onboard
The journey takes around 70-80 minutes. Aegina is the first stop, so if you’re onboard and the boat docks, you should disembark :)
Most boats are directly to “Aegina Port”. This is the destination you want.
Tickets cost around €10-€12 per person.
Hydrofoil (their official name is “Aero”)
Gergo calls these the speedy bois. They are smaller ships, typically no on-board food or drink options other than vending machines. If the seas are a bit rough on the day, these might not run.
The journey takes only about 40 minutes. Aegina is the first stop, so if you’re onboard and the boat docks, you should disembark :)
Tickets cost around €19-€20 per person.
Getting around once on Aegina 🛴
The island is not massive, but it’s not that small either - it would take about 1.5h to drive around the island completely. You will arrive by boat into the main town which has the same name as the island itself (Aegina Town), which has all the amenities you would need on your stay and is home to some great restaurants, bars, etc. If you plan to stay in Aegina Town, you won’t really need to worry about transport except to / from the wedding venues, which we’ll take care of organising. For this reason, the Town is one of our recommended areas for staying in (you can read more about options on the dedicated Accommodation page).
Public transport is minimal. Buses run 2-3 times each direction per day on 3 different routes, so if you plan to explore the island using it, you have to plan your day around that. That being said, the bus station is right by Aegina port, so it’s easy to get to and tickets are €2.
More flexible alternatives are taxis (you should have cash on you), which you can find at taxi ranks (main one next to the port), or you can always call one on +30 2297022200. A 20-minute trip should cost around €10-15.
Lastly, if you want the ultimate freedom, the highest rated rental agency is Giakas Rentals based right in the Port, where you can rent a car, a moped, quads, electric bikes and everything in between.
